Poetry reading

Fri 7 April 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm BST

7th April 2017, Bristol

Join us in the upstairs room of the Lansdown pub in Clifton for a poetry reading, focused on the relationship between poetry and breathing.

Poet Juliana Sokolová will be reading from her own work. Her book of poems My house will have a roof was published by Fra (Prague) in 2013. The poems in the book explore the relationship between grief, language and breathing. Her second book, Lungfish (due to come out in 2018) is based around the Hippocratic text On Airs, Waters and Places. The texts in the book interlace the hypotheses formulated by ancient Greek medical writers about the human body and its illnesses with an exploration of a half-mythical, half-actual quarter in an unspecified Central European town.

Librettist Jennifer Thorp will read her poem sequence ‘Under the Surface’, recently set to music in a Life of Breath commission by Toby Young. The sequence is a set of motets, designed to be sung polyphonically, and explores the poetic inflections of breathlessness, from drowning to resurfacing. Her work has been performed in Westminster Abbey, the Britten Theatre, Kings College Cambridge and elsewhere.

Members of the audience are encouraged to bring along poems to read (of their own if they so wish), relevant to the theme of breathing.
