Beckett’s Breathing Rhythms: Worstward Ho (1983) and Stirrings Still (1989)

As part of a seminar on the Rhythm of Prose at the American Comparative Literature Association 2016 conference, Arthur Rose took the opportunity to explore Samuel Beckett’s later works. It has been suggested that Beckett’s later works are written with a breathing-like rhythm, although, as Arthur discussed, this does not mean that they are all written with the same rhythm. Indeed, these two works reveal very contrasting rhythms, phrasing and punctuation (or lack of) perhaps indicative of Beckett’s intention to create alternative representations of being.
